Last year, San Diego’s Pride Parade attracted more than 250,000 attendees and 235 distinct contingents (marching and vehicles) in the parade alone, so navigating your way through it all can be challenging. Free and family friendly, Pride by the Beach is a program of the North County LGBTQ Center. The weekend’s activities are organized by San Diego Pride, a non-profit whose stated mission is “fostering pride, equality, and respect for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities locally, nationally, and globally.” Now, as we honor the 50th anniversary of Stonewall and the hard-fought victories that followed, it’s time for rainbows to fly over the streets of Hillcrest with one of the best Pride Parades in the nation. San Diego Gay Pride takes place every summer in July, which is when the city comes to life. San Diego's first gay pride parade took place in 1975, making it one of the longest-standing annual parades of its type on the west coast. Stay posted on our page and their relevant social media for updates on 2022 dates. With nearly 200 days over 70 degrees a year, it’s no wonder San Diegans spend a majority of their time outdoors. The popular Pride parade is among the largest in the United States. 2019’s SD Pride took place at Balboa Park and saw over 40,000 participants. San Diego’s Pride movement began in 1970, just months after the historic Stonewall Uprising, when LGBTQ students at San Diego State College organized to form the Gay Liberation Front, which later that year hosted a “Gay-In” in Presido Park, likely the first Pride event in San Diego history. San Diego hosts its legendary annual gay Pride festival in July each year to celebrate with the local LGBTQ+ community.
